Notification
If you are under 18 years old
- You have the right to get an abortion, but the abortion provider must tell your parent or legal guardian about your decision to have an abortion at least 48 hours before your appointment. This is called parental notice.
- Your parent or guardian does NOT need to agree with your decision.
- If you cannot or do not want to involve your parents, or if they will not support your decision, you can ask the court for a judicial bypass. This is a legal process where a judge can give you permission to decide on your own whether to have an abortion.
- The court must schedule the hearing and a judge must make a decision within 2 days (not including holidays and weekends) of you asking for a judicial bypass.
- You can have a lawyer help you prepare the application for free:
- Equality Health Center (EHC) runs a hotline to connect young people with a free lawyer to help you through every step of the judicial bypass process. You can call them at 603-225-2739 or learn more on EHC’s website here.
- You can also contact the ACLU of New Hampshire at 603-227-6678.
- The advocates at the Planned Parenthood of Northern New England Call Center can help you schedule an appointment for an abortion and begin the judicial bypass process. Call them at 800-230-7526.
- If you still have questions about judicial bypass in New Hampshire, we can help. Call 844-868-2812 or contact us through our secure form to speak with a lawyer.
You also have the right to travel to a state that does not have parental involvement laws.
